Boston & Providence Railroad Station (second) is dedicated.

January 5, 1875

Architect: Peabody & Stearns. Robert Peabody. Designed in the High Gothic style with an 80-foot tall clock tower, it is located on Columbus Avenue on the site of today’s Park Plaza Hotel at 50 Park Plaza. The largest railroad station in New England, and the longest (850 feet) in the world, the building includes a 150-foot-high clock tower and contains billiard, reading, smoking and dining rooms. The station closes and trains are re-routed to South Station on September 10, 1899. Used briefly as a roller rink, the building is demolished in 1909 and replaced by a hotel and office building in 1927.*
